Spelling Investigation of the Week


Why do some words double the last consonant if you add 'er' or 'ing' and others don't? Can you find the pattern?


bat - batter- batting

run-runner-running

trim-trimmer-trimming


push and jump don't double their last consonant.


Add examples and thoughts below.

  6. We found these words that don't double the last consonant: climb, sing, click, stink.

  7. We don't double the last letter if it is a vowel or a blend or has two different consonants at the end of the word. Like in go or bike.
